![]() There’s a great balance between more upbeat and melodic songs like “Other Side” and “Celebrate Nothing” and the subdued “Stand Alone” and somber “Crying.” The musicianship is tight and songs are all well written, though you do get the sense that the band isn’t entirely comfortable with English lyrics. You catch that right off the bat, when the chorus of “Silent Cries” kicks in and you go from somber verse to head-banging chorus. There’s a narrow line between the poppy gothic metal that HIM and Dommin made popular and the more crushing, doom-laden gothic metal, and Urban Tales walks that line well. Like all good gothic metal albums, Loneliness Still Is the Friend succeeds in conveying a sense of melancholy that generally makes you want to kill yourself and/or go dancing with goth chicks. There are also some similarities to Australian band Voyager, and Type O Negative and Paradise Lost appear to have influenced the band. Urban Tales isn’t quite so sinister or doomy as Moonspell though, taking a more melodic, more accessible – but still sufficiently bleak – approach. It’s taking the easiest route to compare Urban Tales to Portugal’s best known gothic metal export Moonspell, but in this case it’s a perfectly appropriate comparison since vocalist Marcos Cesar has an incredibly expressive, very deep voice that frequently brings to mind Fernando Ribeiro. Not to be confused with the similarly named Finnish melodic rock band Urban Tale, Urban Tales is a Portuguese gothic metal band. So, yeah, it can only be all downhill from here.Loneliness Still Is the Friend is the second full-length album from Urban Tales. The best! Keith Urban was the ultimate guy I’d want to perform with. He’s been interviewed by country radio stations and news publications and he’s been featured on national news broadcasts. Thanks to social media, his performance has been seen by millions of people around the globe. Now more than ever.”įor now, he’s playing solo gigs, including at Hudson House in Hudson. My ultimate goal has always been to get to Nashville and play. And I kept hearing what a great music program Lowell has. Joyce, who lives in Berlin, has been playing guitar since he was 10, and transferred to UMass Lowell from Anna Maria College in Paxton. Two years ago, the country singer plucked twin sisters Laura and Elizabeth Kender ’16 from the crowd when he saw their sign touting UMass Lowell Lacrosse. Urban seems to have a thing for UMass Lowell students. ![]() ![]() Music business student Rob Joyce plays guitar on stage at a Keith Urban concert in Gilford, N.H. “I’ve always watched him play – live, on video – and I study the way he plays. “Oh, I’ve seen Keith Urban a bunch of times,” Joyce says. “Rob certainly did us proud,” he noted, and “didn’t crumple, never had an unsure moment, just delivered with ease as if he played for thousands of people every night.” Williams says “owning the moment” is something stressed to students. He says Joyce played with “total command, confidence and poise.” “From the moment he began to play, it was clear to the audience, to the band and most importantly to Keith Urban that Rob was playing at the level of a top professional,” says Alan Williams, chair of the Music Department and coordinator of the music business program. “It’s been an amazing, amazing week,” said Joyce from Maine, where he is vacationing with Wright’s family. Urban posted a post-show video laden with kudos for Joyce, “a massive shout-out of awesomeness to Rob, you killed it tonight on guitar!” The band, which had retreated offstage while Urban did his audience shtick, headed back on and joined in. Joyce strapped on Urban’s guitar and picked his way into the up-tempo rocker “Good Thing,” astounding both the crowd and Urban with his six-string fluency. What followed went viral, making Joyce an internet star. Pressed up near the stage, Wright held up a sign noting it was Rob’s birthday, begging Urban to let him play guitar, on stage. The music business major had just turned 24 and the tickets to Keith Urban’s concert at the 8,000-capacity Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion in Gilford, N.H., were the perfect gift.Īccompanying him to the show was his girlfriend of a year-and-a-half, Alexandra Wright. July 2 turned out to be a fairy-tale night for Rob Joyce.
